From the Gothic-style architecture of the church and convent, to its early Renaissance façade, the great basilica reflects the changing artistic, religious, and social trends of the late medieval world. Containing works by Giotto and Orcagna and reflecting the patronage of some of Florence’s most important families such as the Strozzi, Rucellai, and Tornabuoni, Santa Maria Novella is one of Europe’s most important medieval churches.
