Join Dr. Rocky for this video lecture to understand how the 14th-century Florentine painter Giotto revolutionized Western art. He definitively broke with the Byzantine-style tradition of his time by transforming iconic and sacred images into realistic and humanized ones, using nature as his inspiration. Much like Dante, who revolutionized literature by writing in common parlance, Giotto introduced what Dr. Rocky likes to call the “visual vernacular.” His paintings are full of animated characters, convincing landscapes, and expressive colors. They evoke sounds, smells, emotions, and humor. Giotto’s milestone innovations rightfully earned him the title of “the father of Western painting.”
