Redefining the Renaissance: Pontormo and the Capponi Altarpiece in Florence
1h 0m
Dr. Rocky Ruggiero
In 1525, the extraordinary Mannerist painter Jacopo Pontormo was commissioned to decorate the Capponi Chapel in Santa Felicita in Florence. Pontormo painted the dome and its surrounding pendentives, a side wall fresco of the “Annunciation” and an altarpiece whose beauty is beyond discussion, but whose subject matter has alluded art historians for centuries. Once described as “a bouquet of sorrow,” the painting seems to intentionally defy normal iconographic parameters. Join Dr. Rocky for this exclusive webinar where he will examine the controversy surrounding this sublime painting and attempt to answer some of the open questions concerning it.
